Bermuda Industrial Union top brass have received another massive vote of confidence from their members.

The 10 leading officers kept their jobs after nobody opposed them during elections at last week's union conference. These included president Mr.

Ottiwell Simmons MP, first vice-president Mr. Derrick Burgess, second vice-president Mr. Chris Furbert, and general secretary Ms Mollie Burgess.

Also put back in were assistant general secretary Mr. Calvin Smith, recording secretary Ms Carolyn Young, and treasurer Mr. Collin Simmons.

Others reinstated were: union organiser Mr. Robert Johnston, research officer Dr. Barbara Ball, and education officer Mr. Calvert Bean.

The 10 form the executive of the Bermuda Industrial Union's general council.

Just six posts were subject to elections -- the general council's special delegates.

These included Mr. Munroe Darrell and Ms Gaynelle Pace, both representing Bermuda's hospitals.

The others were: Mr. Graham Nesbitt, Works & Engineering; Mr. Llewellyn Ming, Telco; and Mr. Steven Smith and Mr. Michael Murray, hotels.

Voted in by secret ballot, they will hold their posts for two years until the next BIU conference. Then they will be replaced.

The rest of the general council is made up of presidents and secretaries of the union's divisions, which number about 20.

Substitutes, or stand-ins for the divisional leaders, are also on the council.

Each division will soon hold elections for their presidents, secretaries, and substitutes.

The general council's total membership comes to more than 80.

Mr. Simmons described last week's 13th Biennial Delegates Conference of the BIU as a big success. He said people left it feeling "upbeat''. Morale had been given a huge boost.

"It was seen as the best conference yet. There was a very full turn-out,'' he added.
