Mr. Pettingill, who was educated at Gilbert Institute and head boy at Warwick Academy in 1981/82, takes up the position of assistant Crown counsel.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and psychology from Mount Allison University in Canada in 1986. And the following year he received a Bachelor of Education.

Mr. Pettingill was then attracted to the legal profession and received his law degree two years ago from City University in London.

During his summer and Christmas breaks in law school, he worked at Appleby, Spurling & Kempe.

Mr. Pettingill, who was called to the English Bar earlier this year, did his pupilage in the Attorney General's chambers last summer.

Yesterday, he thanked AS and K lawyer, Mr. Alan Dunch and his wife for being a "source of strength and support.'' And he thanked everyone in the Attorney General's chambers, particularly Attorney General Mr. Walter Maddocks and senior Crown counsel Mr. Barrie Meade, for the support given to him as a law student.

President of the Bermuda Bar Council, Mr. John Riihiluoma Jr. welcomed him to the Bar on behalf of the council.

He said more Bermudians were joining the Attorney General's chambers and it was a trend he would like to see continue.

Mr. Dunch echoed similar sentiments, adding that Mr. Pettingill's mother, Doreen Pettingill and grandmother Mrs. Liz Shirley should be recognised for his achievements.

Puisne Judge the Hon. Mr. Justice Ward welcomed Mr. Pettingill and wished him well.

"Like myself I see that you were once a teacher,'' Mr. Ward said. "Also like myself you are the beneficiary of a strong family structure and once again like myself, you have profited from hard work.'' Mr. Mark Pettingill.
