BLDC to prepare site for 45-acre industrial park
to improve industrial and recreation areas at Southside.
"These projects are part of our continuing efforts to improve Southside for businesses and for the general public,'' noted BLDC Chief Executive Officer Carl Musson.
A contract tender has been issued for site preparation work at Southside's main industrial sector which lies between Ship's Wharf and the Airport fence, said spokesman Don Grearson.
The tender calls for the installation of services to individual lots throughout the 45-acre sector, including telephone, water, electricity and storm water and sanitary sewers.
It also calls for the removal of asphalt, the construction of concrete pads for new buildings, the resurfacing of existing roads and landscaping improvements such as hedging and the installation of signage.
The BLDC is also preparing to demolish five dilapidated tin sheds situated on a ribbon of industrial land which lies alongside the airfield fence, said Mr.
Grearson.
This is part of the BLDC's ongoing effort to clear Southside of unsafe and unsightly buildings left by the US Navy.
The sheds have loose siding and doors that are a safety hazard, particularly in windy conditions, he said.
BLDC work is also underway to relocate two industrial buildings from the Clearwater Beach area to Southside's main industrial sector.
Island Construction has been awarded the contract to demolish the two 4,000-square-foot buildings and to reconstruct them in the main industrial sector, said Mr. Grearson.
One building has already been stripped of its exterior walls.
The building will be erected in the industrial sector in shell form to enable the BLDC to incorporate features that meet the needs of tenants.
The relocation will help rationalise the use of land at Southside by moving the buildings to a dedicated industrial area from Clearwater Beach that is devoted to recreation and open space, he pointed out.
