Bodybuilder plans city health club

But if the Development Applications Board approves former Mr. Bermuda Mr. Mark Smith's plans, the club will not feature "seldom-used and expensive'' extras such as whirlpools and saunas.

It will be for the man or woman who is serious about "making a difference in their body physically and their selves mentally'', said Mr. Smith.

He added: "There is definitely room for another health club here.'' The accountant and body builder said owning a health club had always been his ambition.

He submitted the application this month. He plans to turn a floor of Hemisphere House on Church Street, opposite Karl's Guys and Dolls, into a health and fitness club.

Mr. Smith said he had received permission from the owner of the building to lease the space for that purpose if he gets approval.

However, someone else apparently has their eye on using the building for the same purpose.

Mr. Leon Nearon has also applied to the DAB to have a health club in Hemisphere House. His application was submitted a day before Mr. Smith's, but he has declined to comment on his plans.
