Booklet released to help job-hungry Bermudians
Labour Minister Quinton Edness yesterday released a booklet aimed at helping young Bermudians to make wise career choices.
The booklet, entitled The Bermuda Occupations Outlook Handbook '97, sets out individual career interests, identifies links between education and career options, and shows anticipated jobs and future trends.
Highlighting 40 occupations, the booklet also contains a list of key persons who may be contacted for further information on each occupational area and facts about the various occupations.
The booklet also provides a glossary of employment-related terms and useful library reference books.
And it indicates how many positions were recorded in 1995 and whether the positions were held by Bermudians or non-Bermudians.
The booklet extends the work of Human Resources Committee in the 1980s, that is "Career Choices & Post-Secondary Students Overseas'' and compliments Government's Statistical Department publications such as the Bermuda Standard Classification of Occupations booklet and the Employment Survey Reports.
"I am very pleased that we have produced a document that will be of real practical benefit to job hunters and to persons who want to change careers,'' Mr. Edness said.
He added that he hoped the booklet would "help young people identify their job interests, link school subjects to career options, map the jobs of the future and help them make informed career decisions''.
The booklets are free and available at the Department of Labour and Training on Reid Street and the Bookmart at the Phoenix Centre.
CedarBridge Academy, the Bermuda College, and the Bermuda National Library will also have copies available.
Information in the booklet was compiled by Labour and Training Vocational Officer Andre Wilkin who worked with the Chamber of Commerce to put together the list of contacts.
Mr. Edness said: "The publication of this handbook fulfils Government's commitment to emphasising the skills and jobs Bermuda will need in the Twenty-first century so that young people will be able to prepare themselves for the future.'' BOOKS BKS EDUCATION ED
