Lois Browne Evans will soon retire as Jamaica's honorary consul in Bermuda.

The Legislative Affairs Minister said her resignation was made necessary by her recent Government appointment.

"I can't serve two governments,'' she explained.

And she added: "I will miss trying to assist the people of Jamaica who have had some problems and needed someone to intervene on their behalf.'' Mrs. Browne Evans made the announcement yesterday at a Press conference in honour of the first official visit of Jamaica's newest Consul General, Basil Bryan.

Dr. Bryan, accompanied by his wife and vice-consul Lincoln Downer, arrived this weekend and is on the Island until tomorrow to pay courtesy calls on local officials and meet with Jamaican residents.

Yesterday, Dr. Bryan commended Mrs. Browne Evans saying she had served Jamaica well since the 1970s and reflected the very best of Bermuda.

And although Mrs. Browne Evans will not be replaced for another four to five months, the Consul General said he hoped to informally draw upon her "reservoir of experience'' in the years to come.

While pointing out the friendly relationship between Bermuda and Jamaica, Dr.

Bryan identified questions of citizenship for Bermuda-born children and recognition of Jamaica's education standards as concerns of the "vibrant'' local Jamaican community. And he went on to say he had spoken with Youth and Sport Minister Terry Lister in hopes of arranging for Jamaica's under-17 football team to visit the Island to "build upon the tradition of people to people relationships''.

Dr. Bryan, who is responsible for 38 states across the United States as well as Puerto Rico and Bermuda, yesterday met with Premier Jennifer Smith, the Mayor of Hamilton and held a general meeting with Jamaican residents at the Bermuda Industrial Union Headquarters. Before leaving he will pay courtesy calls on Opposition Leader Pamela Gordon and Governor Thorold Masefield.

Dr. Bryan will also visit Jamaican nationals incarcerated in the Island's prisons.
