Andre G. Smith, of Controversy Lane, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to breaking into former employers KD Paint Shop and stealing $291 worth of items.

Smith broke into the shop on August 30 and stole four instructor manual books, a gold ring, and cash, prosecuting Sgt. Earl Kirby said.

Kirk Douglas, the owner of the paint shop, reported the break-in to Police and Smith was later arrested and admitted to the offence.

Sgt. Kirby said Smith told Police he committed the offences to get back at Douglas.

Smith claimed that Douglas owed him more than $290.

He also claimed that he had thrown away the books and the ring near his house.

Smith produced the ring in court yesterday, but he said the books were destroyed by rain.

Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. Cherly-Ann Mapp ordered Smith to pay a fine of $400 right away or spend 40 days in prison.

She also ordered him to make restitution for the books and cash taken.
