vacant Canadian and US bases recommended by a Government committee investigating future uses of the land.

Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan said the list of secret proposals was "of an interesting nature''. "A few were of a similar nature,'' he added.

The Royal Gazette understands three suggested uses for Daniel's Head are a hotel cottage colony, a park and a Police training facility.

Sir John said the ideas were in the hands of his Cabinet, which would be reviewing them over the next month.

They were mostly to do with the 17-acre Daniel's Head in Sandys Parish -- former site of the Canadian forces, he said.

However, there was one submission on the US Naval Annex in Southampton, he added, which although vacated, is yet to be officially returned to Bermuda.

He expected the proposals would not be made public until the New Year.

"We still have to look at them properly and conduct interviews if necessary,'' he said.

Some ideas have been made public, although this does not mean they were actually submitted to the committee for consideration. They include: A film studio at the Annex, suggested by a group of British business people; A golf course at the Annex, suggested by Commission on Competitiveness chief Mr. Mansfield Brock; A concert hall on either area of land, suggested by local concert promoters, including Mr. Choy Aming; and Sir John is hoping to get a firm decision on the Annex when he meets with US Navy officials in Norfolk, Virginia and Washington DC on Tuesday.

The US Navy has yet to say whether it wants a presence in Bermuda beyond September, 1995, when Congress plans to cut off funding for the US Naval Air Station here.

But Sir John said it was likely the US would return the Southampton land to Bermuda. A glossy brochure was produced last year by Government to attract investors to Daniel's Head, which has 34 buildings on site, including a three-bedroom home, two messes, senior ranks quarters with six one-bedroom suites and a headquarters building.

It read in part: "We would prefer a use which will preserve the integrity of the property, such as a high quality recreational resort complex, a research or educational facility or the headquarters of an international agency or health spa.'' Cabinet's decision for Daniel's Head is likely to balance the need to replace the revenue earned from the Canadians with the needs of the community.

According to the last Budget, direct spending by the Canadian forces base in 1991 amounted to $3.2 million, excluding personal expenditure by officers.

Former Government Senate leader the Hon. Charles Collis headed the bases committee.

Earlier this year he said: "We've had a number of interesting proposals involving Daniel's Head on the basis that it's one of the most lovely sites in Bermuda for a cottage colony cum small convention centre.''
