Careers help for students

opportunities in Bermuda the Ministry of Human Affairs and the Chamber of Commerce are having a careers day.

Human Affairs and Information Minister the Hon. Jerome Dill together with executive vice president of the Chamber of Commerce Ms Carolyn Mello announced plans for Bermuda Career Track 95, a one day career planning workshop designed to help students, which will be held on Friday at the Bermuda College.

Mr. Dill said the afternoon workshops will include business leaders from 12 areas: education, engineering, law, medicine, hospitality, banking, International business, insurance, journalism, advertising, small business, computer technology, accounting and secretarial.

"Industry leaders will be on hand to meet with the students and provide them with important insights into the kind of entry positions available and for the qualities businesses look for in new recruits.

"The one day session, will include informative briefings by industry professionals on career search tips. Students will be invited to attend a special networking business reception with Government dignitaries and business professionals.'' A registration fee of $25 for the full day session covers the cost of all information materials, sample resumes, complimentary breakfast, lunch and a business reception.

Ms Mello said: "A growing number of university students are returning to Bermuda after years of study and are unable to find suitable employment. We invest a lot in the education of our young people and it is critical that we provide them with practical career search help when they need it most.

"Students need to be re-familiarised with the job market here, and the summer holidays are an excellent time to reach these students.

"Our members are highly supportive of this initiative. They are very interested in giving our students every opportunity.'' Ms Mello also said the sessions will give students the opportunity to assess the marketplace and to meet directly with potential employers.

She added: "We encourage all students home for the summer to take advantage of this important event.'' Those students or their parents interested in participating in the workshop are asked to call the Chamber of Commerce at 295-4201.

Workshop details are as follows: 8.30 a.m. -- Registration 9 a.m. -- Opening address by Mr. Dill 9.15 a.m. -- A Marketplace overview -- Ms Deborah Jackson, of Appleby Spurling and Kempe.

9.45 a.m. -- Personal Marketing Techniques -- Ms Donna Harvey-Maybury, of the Bermuda Employers Council.

10.30 a.m. - Tips for the Effective Resume' -- Ms Crystal Clay, Bank of Bermuda. 11.15 a.m. - The Successful Job Interview -- Ms Christine Williams, of the Bank of Bermuda.

12 p.m. -- lunch 1 p.m. -- Round table discussions with industry leaders -- an opportunity for students to discuss career prospects with industry leaders.

6.30 p.m. -- Networking Business Reception.
