Commonwealth games pole vaulter remembered
House of Assembly yesterday by Tourism Minister the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge as one of the Island's outstanding representatives.
Mr. Mowbray worked for a long time with the Tourism Department in Bermuda and in New York.
He was also a pole vaulter who represented Bermuda in the Commonwealth Games.
Mr. Woolridge also noted Mr. Mowbray's ancestor, Mr. Louis Mowbray, who founded the Bermuda Aquarium.
Mr. Trevor Woolridge (PLP) asked that condolences be sent to the family of the late Mrs. Eunice Simons, a former probation officer, dedicated community worker and an evangelist in her church, Heard Chapel AME.
MPs expressed condolences over the death of Mr. Maxwell Smith Sr. of Burnt House Hill. Mr. Reginald Burrows (PLP) recalled Mr. Smith's war-time reputation as Bermuda's premier marathon runner.
"He was a hero to young people,'' he said, adding that Mr. Maxwell was also a keen farmer and taxi driver.
Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul recalled looking up to Mr. Smith as "one of the great old-timers.'' Mr. Harry Soares (UBP) asked the House to congratulate Mrs. Martha Dismont whose work with The Learning Centre helped stop children "from falling through the cracks''. He said MPs should support the worthy cause.
Works Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons asked that condolences be sent to the family of the late George Dickson, a long-time employee of the Works and Engineering Ministry.
Ms Renee Webb (PLP) asked that congratulations be sent to Bermudian soprano Mrs. Marcelle Clemens, who performed last week at the City Hall. Both she and Education Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira described Mrs. Clemens voice as world class.
Ms Jennifer Smith (PLP) said Mrs. Clemens was an example to young and old Bermudians to "pursue your dreams.'' Mr. Alex Scott (PLP) congratulated Mr.
Stanley Kennedy on becoming the head of the Institute of Bermuda Architects, "the first black man to head that august body.'' "He's another home boy who's done well,'' Mr. Scott said.
Dr. Saul asked that condolences be sent to the family of the late Mr. E.T.
(Joe) Lindley who died this week. Dr. Saul recalled Mr. Lindley as a great electrician who probably wired more homes in Bermuda than any other electrician.
Dr. Ewart Brown (PLP) asked that condolences be sent to the family of Mr.
Clarence Corbin, whose son Michael died in Las Vegas.
