St. George's North MP Miss Jennifer Smith (PLP) asked the House to send condolences to the family of the late Mr. Louis Leon (Legs) Smith, who was commonly seen sitting on a wall discussing the issues of the day, or walking his dog. Mr. Smith was the caretaker of the St. George's Youth Centre at the time of his death.

She offered congratulations to 12-year-old Jamal Simmons for his part in the rescue of Mrs. Arlene Denbrook, who was injured in a gas explosion last weekend. She also congratulated the 14 people who received certificates as emergency medical technicians on Thursday.

Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan expressed sorrow at the death of Mr. Edmund (Teddy) Gosling, a well-known yachtsman who "contributed a lot to the outdoor life of a lot of young and old people in Bermuda.'' Mr. Nelson Bascome (PLP) congratulated the organisers of the Miss Teen Bermuda, and its winner Miss Pandora Hardtman.

He asked that condolences be sent to the family of the late Mr. Leslie Horace Spencer, who was instrumental in the presentation of many stage and singing productions throughout the Island.

The Hon. Ralph Marshall (UBP) expressed sorrow at the death of Mr. James (Jimmie) Thorne, who was a well-known raiser of animals and birds, and who many of Bermuda's gardeners knew when he worked at the Purina Feed Store in Hamilton.

The Hon. Quinton Edness (UBP) congratulated the Bermuda Hospitals Board for the emergency medical technician programme. And he congratulated the board for finding an outstanding Bermudian, Ms Sheila Manderson, to replace hospital director Mr. Hume Martin when he leaves in 1994.

He also congratulated the Bermuda College for an impressive graduation on Thursday, which included a number of people trained in fields -- such as addiction counsellors -- specifically tailored to meet Bermuda's needs.

Community Affairs Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons (UBP) congratulated Rev.

Bob Thacker and the congregation of St. Mark's Church in Smith's on their social conscience, for their generous provision of a cottage for AIDS victims.

He congratulated the Hamilton Kiwanis on their 25th anniversary, and Mr. Louis Mowbray and the Bank of Bermuda for their $10,000 gift to North Village for bleachers, their $20,000 contribution to send the national football team to Haiti, and another $20,000 toward sending the team to Antigua.

Education Minister the Hon. Gerald Simons (UBP) noted that an exceptionally high number of males -- 49 out of 130 or so -- graduated from full time programmes at the Bermuda College. He also congratulated the four new fellows named by the College.

Mr. Stanley Lowe (PLP) expressed sorrow at death of Mrs. Edith Louis Ryan, "a quiet, dignified Christian lady'' who was weekly sat in the front row at Vernon Temple AME Church.

Mr. Walter Lister (PLP) regretted the passing of Mr. Harry Rochester, a carpenter, and a quiet man who made a contribution to the community.
