Consul to inquire about Middleton investigation
Canadian citizens and to inquire with authorities into the progress of the Rebecca Middleton murder case.
While calling the visit routine, Mr. Roue told The Royal Gazette this past summer's high-profile crimes against Canadians were high on his agenda.
The Canadian Government, he said, is extremely interested in how the Middleton investigation is progressing and is concerned about the problems Canadian residents and visitors have encountered while on the Island this past year.
Incidents such as the Middleton murder and the robbery and attack of a Canadian Senator and his two companions prompted Ottawa to consider issuing a travel advisory against Bermuda.
In September the Canadian Ministry of External Affairs issued a travel information report urging Canadians to exercise common sense while travelling about the Island.
"To be frank, the advisory against Bermuda is much weaker than the one aimed at travellers to Florida,'' said Mr. Roue. But he added that the advisory however remains in force.
"We have no concern that the (judicial) process is moving forward, we just want to check into the status of the (Middleton) case,'' he said.
Mr. Roue, who handles Bermuda from the Canadian Consulate General in New York, is also available to help those encountering passport and citizenship problems, and to spread the word about the Consulate's new internet web site, which can accessed at http://Canada-NY.org.
He can be reached today and tomorrow through the offices of Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety, at 295-5151.
