CURE attacks `hostile' political ads

And CURE chairman Kenneth Spurling put everyone involved in the election race -- including supporters tempted to freelance from their parties with their own ads -- under heavy manners to avoid "hostility and division.'' Mr. Spurling said: "CURE is working to create a community that promotes harmonious race relations, mutual respect and equal opportunity for all residents.
"We believe that any action, behaviour or attitude that reinforces negative racial stereotyping is indeed a barrier to our social progress and impedes our development as a united community.'' Mr. Spurling was speaking after an advert using a picture of dreadlocked Deleay Robinson, running mate in St. George's North to PLP leader Jennifer Smith, was used under the caption "Jennifer's choice for Finance Minister''.
Under the picture, the ad asked: "Do you really want this man to `broaden the tax base?'.'' The advert -- placed by an anonymous group calling themselves "true believers in Pam and her team'' -- was condemned by Premier Pamela Gordon, while Mr.
Robinson branded it "outrageous'' and "racist.'' And Development and Opportunity Minister Jerome Dill has ordered a probe into the advert.
The UBP last week slammed flyers which hit below the belt and targeted, among others, the Premier and her sister Patricia Gordon-Pamplin.
Mr. Spurling urged people not to "publish or in any way endorse any election material, including pamphlets, leaflets and posters, which cause or invite division between people of different racial or ethnic groups, or which might give rise to hostility or division.'' And he said that those dealing with the public should make sure "no words or actions'' are used which could cause racial hatred or incite racial prejudice.'' Mr. Spurling also called on the political parties to "ensure that all those who work in the election campaign are aware of these principles.'' In today's Royal Gazette the PLP has run a double page ad slamming the UBP's advertising campaign.
One side says "The Truth'' and gets tore into the UBP for its ad series and the other side says "Lies'' -- with the caption "Bet you thought this was a UBP ad.'' Delaey Robinson blasts ad: Page 6
