Corporation meeting hears about parking worries Fears were voiced last night about motorists pouring into North Hamilton as they try to escape parking fees.

The Corporation of Hamilton plans to bring in paid on-street City parking in January.

The area covered will be from Front Street to Victoria Street, and from Bermudiana Road as far east as Court Street.

Last night North Hamilton businessman Mr. Carlton Johnson raised fears money-conscious motorists would move to his area to escape fees.

Mr. Johnson, from Dundonald Street's Footstop Shoe Store, told the Corporation of Hamilton's first open meeting: "You're going to cause more problems.'' Corporation members told him they would look into his concerns. One idea would be to extend one-hour parking bays in North Hamilton.

Some 50 people turned up to the Harbour Room in Front Street's Number One shed for the two-hour meeting.

The Corporation's nine members were present, including the Mayor the Rt. Wor.

Alderman David A. White spoke about the $5.5 million Bull's Head multi-storey car park, which is under construction.

He said it was expected to be completed by the end of October 1995.

"When completed it will hold 720 cars, and with a further 140 parking spaces already in use at Bull's Head, we'll have space for a total of 860 cars at Bull's Head.'' Mr. White said there were three reasons for introducing on-street parking fees: to finance the building of the car park; provide short-term parking for City centre shoppers; and to deter people from parking all day on the streets.

Corporation Secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt explained motorists would buy books of vouchers with each voucher to be worth 50 cents an hour.

Alderman William Frith told the meeting about the proposed revamp of Hamilton docks.

This included a new ramp at No 8 Gate to pull tractor-trailers off Front Street; buying new equipment such as reach stackers to load containers on to trailers; shelving for No 8 warehouse; and a docks advisory board.
