Calvin Edwards, 35, has denied 48 counts of foreign currency exchange control violations involving US$76,300.

He told magistrate the Wor. Cheryl-Ann Mapp he did not show up for his February 21 trial date because he had been suffering from chicken pox while abroad. However, he could not produce a doctor's certificate.

Mrs. Mapp further scolded him for not calling the court to inform them he could not make the trial date.

His lawyer Mr. Archie Warner pointed out it was the first time his client had missed a court date.

But Mrs. Mapp said: "It is unfair that the courts have to constantly adjourn cases because people cannot be bothered to inform us they will not be available.'' She reset bail at $1,000 plus a surety and ordered him to forfeit his previous bail amount.
