The UBP man -- who has fought and lost in Hamilton East before -- is up against Progressive Labour Party candidate Derrick Burgess, an also-ran in the same seat at the last General Election. The desertion is likely to cause some embarrassment to the PLP in the run-up to the February 24 by-election -- in a seat which the party has to retain convincingly.

But the conviction was quashed on appeal to Supreme Court, although decision will be appealed by lawyer Saul Froomkin to the Court of Appeal in March.
Rev. Woolridge, who had lost his Mount Zion AME Church, later opted to sit as an Independent.
But he chose to quit politics after being assigned by his church hierarchy to a parish in Philadelphia.
