Don't forget students -- MP
Northlands students as it tries to satisfy the Dellwood PTA who oppose sending their primary-aged children to Northlands in 1997.
Pembroke West Central MP Mrs. Ann Cartwright DeCouto said current Northlands students are being made to work under appalling conditions because of inadequate buildings and lack of equipment.
Education Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira confirmed he had spoken to Mrs.
Cartwright DeCouto and said her concerns would be included in the ongoing deliberations.
He met with Parent Teacher Associations from both primary and secondary schools two weeks ago.
Among the many topics discussed during the two hour meeting was the issue of the putting Dellwood's primary students at Northlanbds and making Dellwood a middle school in September 1997.
But the Dellwood PTA opposed the plan, saying that regardless of how much money was spent to upgrade Northlands it could never be made adequate.
Along with the PTA, the Coalition for the Protection of Children has come out against the plan.
Mrs. Mary Samuels, chairperson of the Dellwood committee that is overseeing the planned restructuring, said the PTA "categorically rejected'' the plan.
The Dellwood PTA wants Government to look at the old Technical Institute site as a location for the proposed Pembroke middle school but Government said this was unworkable because because it was going to be used as part of the planned sports complex.
But this development came under fire from Shadow Education Minister Ms Jennifer Smith.
She said that Government had planned to use the Technical Institute to house the Education Ministry.
"Now without any public discussion, we hear that property has been turned over to Youth and Sport. When was that decision made? And who made it?'' Dr. Terceira said plans for the Technical Insititute were never concrete.
