Driver sees red over blind spot
warned yesterday.
The woman spoke out after narrowly avoiding a collision with a taxi after pulling out to drive round a drilling truck parked at Barnes Corner, South Shore Road, Southampton.
And the woman -- who asked not to be named -- said: "It's a major obstruction -- and somebody's going to get killed on that corner unless they do something about it.'' The woman said traffic travelling east -- towards Hamilton -- was forced to drive on the wrong side of the road on the corner.
And she added: "I was travelling along that road the other day -- as I got ready to go around the truck, a taxi came flying around the corner and only missed me because he swerved onto the grass verge.'' She added the drilling truck was coned off -- but called for temporary traffic lights to be installed to avoid accidents.
The woman said: "It didn't even have lights on it at first so you could see it in the dark -- although it has yellow, flashing lights now.
"But somebody coming towards Somerset isn't expecting to see somebody on their side of the road coming round the corner.'' The woman added: "The truck's been there about three or four weeks -- what it really needs is traffic lights there to try and avoid an accident.
"Apart from anything else, it's a very popular stretch of road for tourists on bikes -- it's an accident waiting to happen.'' The woman added that she had contacted the Police to complain about the danger -- but said she had been told there was nothing they could do.
The Royal Gazette was last night unable to establish if the truck belonged to Ministry of Works and Engineering or if it was contracted out to the Ministry.
But the woman driver said: "I don't care whose it is -- it's still a hazard to the public.'' Accidents will happen: Despite a complaint from one furious and concerned driver, Police say there is nothing they can do about the blind spot on Barnes Corner.
