Drug workers to be honoured
tomorrow to mark UN International Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.
Long-serving drug intervention counsellor Mr. Bryant Richards will be among 20 people and companies honoured by Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan and the Hon.
Quinton Edness, Minister of Health, Social Services and Housing, for their work in fighting drug and alcohol abuse.
The ceremony is being organised by Mr. Edness' ministry and the National Alcohol and Drug Agency. NADA executive director Mr. Calvin Ming said: "The work done by these individuals and groups directly affects our community and this is only a small token of appreciation.'' A host of activities, including parachute jumping demonstrations, tug-of-war contests, and a horseshoe tournament, will be held at Clearwater Beach from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
A fireworks display will cap the day's events.
Refreshments and bus transportation will be provided throughout the day.
Parking will be permitted along Clearwater Beach in designated areas.
In case of inclement weather, the celebration will be held on July 5.
CONDOLENCES SENT TO ANC OBT Condolences sent to ANC Bermuda anti-apartheid campaigners have sent condolences to the African National Congress after the violent deaths of unarmed men and children in Boipatong, South Africa.
The Anti-Apartheid Coalition of Bermuda also called upon the Bermuda Government to support the ANC's call for an investigation into the tragedy and other recent violent incidents.
BREAK-IN SPREE CRM Break-in spree Police are investigating eight island-wide house burglaries and an office break-in at a Paget cafe, which occurred earlier this week.
Spokesman Sgt. John Dale said: "At a couple of the break-ins culprits fled because they were disturbed by the occupants or by barking dogs.'' He said money was stolen during most of the raids.
A 23-year-old Devonshire man, said Sgt. Dale, is helping Police with their inquiries.
IGNORED SIGN CTS Ignored sign Glen Johnson, 44, of Middle Road, Warwick, was fined $575 in Magistrates' Court yesterday after pleading guilty to disobeying a traffic sign, using an unlicensed car, and not having insurance or a driving licence.
The offences came to light when Police stopped Johnson for ignoring the traffic sign at the junction of Middle Road with Khyber Pass, Warwick.
Meanwhile, Troy Durham, 28, of Mount Hill, Pembroke, was fined $75 in Magistrates' Court yesterday after admitting disobeying a stop sign at the junction of Church Street with King Street, Hamilton.
PASTOR'S FUNERAL OBT Pastor's funeral The funeral took place this week of former pastor of Grace-Cobb's Hill Methodist Circuit, the Rev. Douglas Patterson, who died on Saturday.
Rev. Patterson leaves behind his wife Gerda, son Tim, of Canada, daughter Kathy, of Bermuda, and his father and brother in England.
The funeral was held at St. Margaret's United Church in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
