Educators congratulated by the House
educators named to senior positions this week.
Community Affairs Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons was the first of many to congratulate Dr. George Cook, who will be the next president of the Bermuda College, and Mrs. Michelle Gabisi, who will become the next principal of Berkeley.
Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul congratulated Mr. Alex Outerbridge and Keep Bermuda Beautiful for their successful Marine Cleanup Day last week.
Shadow Education Minister Miss Jennifer Smith (PLP) joined in the congratulations for Dr. Cook and Mrs. Gabisi. She also praised outgoing college president Dr. Archie Hallett for his "sterling service'' in guiding the college through a difficult period of expansion.
Delegated Affairs Minister the Hon. Sir John Sharpe congratulated three Bermuda Regiment men, Maj. David Burch, Capt. William Madeiros and the Governor's ADC, Capt. Larry Mussenden, for their "brave attempt'' to provide air transport to the World Cup football game in Antigua.
It was not an effort to make money, Sir John said, but to support the Bermuda team. "I hope they will not be discouraged.'' He praised their initiative and wished the Bermuda team every success.
Mr. Reginald Burrows (PLP) asked that condolences be sent to the family of the late Mr. Nicholas (Nick) DeRosa, a former soldier, policeman and taxi-driver, and brother-in-law of the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge. "He always had the best interests of Bermuda at heart,'' he said.
Mrs. Lois Browne-Evans (PLP) praised the Bermudian show Tropical Heatwave at the Princess in Hamilton, which she attended on her birthday. "It shows what other hotels could do,'' she said.
Mr. Nelson Bascome (PLP) praised Mr. Brian Wellman on his second straight NCAA triple jump title in Austin, Texas, while Mrs. Grace Bell (UBP) praised the Loyal Hill group in Devonshire that had organised Friday night functions for youngsters in the area.
Shadow Environment Minister Mr. Julian Hall congratulated the Opposition's Senate Leader Sen. Alex Scott on his birthday.
