Reading Recovery programme.

Darnell Todd-Wynn, the education officer in charge, explained how the programme works.

"Reading recovery is an early intervention programme designed to assist the lowest achieving children in Primary Two who are having difficulty learning to read and write,'' she said.

First implemented in Bermuda in 1997, the aim of the programme, according to Mrs. Todd-Wynn, "is to dramatically reduce the number of children with literacy difficulties. This means in the long term fewer will need extended support.'' Claiming the Reading Recovery programme to be "the most well researched reading programme in the world'', Mrs. Todd-Wynn pointed out the rigorous training undertaken to succeed in the course.

"It is the equivalent of graduate level work,'' she said.

Teachers who graduated last Wednesday were: Carmelita Smith, Gina Evans, Gina Smith, Jennifer Marcell, Beverly Tucker, Shacolbi Smith, Sharon Phillips and Jennaire Christopher.
