Expert to talk on benefits of middle school

Parents of children in primary class six are being invited to a talk about middle schools tomorrow.

Dr. Nancy Doda is in Bermuda this week for the Island's Middle School Association Annual Conference, which will be held at Sonesta Beach Hotel.

She has a rich background in middle school education, working as an education consultant in all 50 states in the US, Canada and Europe.

She will arrive tomorrow and will give a presentation on the benefits of middle school.

Parents and their children are invited along to Sonesta Beach for the talk at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

On Friday she will be the association's keynote speaker at the conference in the morning, and will hold workshops for teachers on differentiated instruction in the afternoon.

The annual conference on Friday will celebrate more than three years of middle schools.

Teachers will be discussing problems and issues they face, as well as how they are progressing in the education of ten to 14 year-olds.

President of the Bermuda Middle School Association Derek Tully said the main theme of the day will be where middle schools are at after one generation of children have gone through their classes.

He said: "We in middle level education in Bermuda are really proud of how well we have done this past three years.

"Our focus now is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the first generation of middle schools and to continue to build a first class middle school system which Bermudians can be proud of.

"This coming year we are going to focus on bringing the primary six teachers into our workshops. They have so much to offer us in the way of background information, reporting methods, assessing etc.

"We shall be setting up a special day in which the primary six teachers can meet with the middle level one teachers to ensure a seamless transition for the children from primary school to middle education.''
