Police have arrested a 51-year-old Pembroke man and a 43-year-old Devonshire man in connection with a fire at a derelict house early on Sunday morning.

The pair were picked up near the scene on suspicion of arson when Police returned later Sunday morning to await the arrival of fire investigators. The arrests followed a second, smaller fire in the two-story structure, located at the intersection of Court and Elliott Streets.

Fire crews were called out again and the fire was quickly put out. On checking the building, a man was found sleeping in an adjacent room and evacuated.

Fire investigations are continuing. One of the two men arrested has been released on bail.

PRINCIPALS DISCUSS SCHOOL SECURITY CON ED Principals discuss school security School officials from the US and Bermuda are focussing on school security and discipline in a workshop at Sonesta Beach Hotel this week.

The workshop -- an annual event sponsored by the National Association of School Principals -- has attracted some 20 principals from the US and 45 local principals, administrators and representatives of the Bermuda Union of Teachers and the National PTA.

Blauvelt, is presenting several strategies to help school officials cope with school security and discipline.

Topics at the workshop include dealing with students with weapons, sex offences, drugs, violent students, trespassers, theft and vandalism.

Dr. Blauvelt will also teach principals how to conduct a successful search and help them develop crisis plans.

School officials will also look at ways to create school security teams and explore issues that cause fear and anxiety in students.

MAN DENIES FORGERY CTS Man denies forgery A 26-year-old Warwick man yesterday denied stealing and forging a cheque.

Chris Ray, of Spring Hill Road, pleaded not guilty in Magistrates' court to receiving a cheque, knowing that it was stolen, uttering the stolen cheque and attempting to obtain goods by false pretences on March 19.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis denied prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor's request to have Ray remanded in custody.

Ray was released on $1,000, plus a surety in the like sum and ordered to return for trial on July 1.
