And the track record of the Hampshire Constabulary's mobile patrol unit -- former stomping ground of ex-Deputy Commissioner Michael Mylod -- puts Bermuda's Police drivers in a more positive light.

Questions were raised over the training of Bermuda's Police drivers after five cars were wrecked in just four weeks at the end of last year.

The spate of accidents caused Police chiefs to review driver training procedures while Shadow Public Safety Minister Alex Scott urged for drivers to be sent to training schools in the UK.

But British newspaper reports have revealed that the UK's Hampshire Constabulary has an even worse record of accidents.

The force has lost 19 of its fleet of 36 vehicles in the last 18 months.

And injured officers are taking legal action to see if they can sue their bosses for failing to provide proper training.

"Perhaps they ought to send British drivers out here and, through cross fertilisation we can all learn something,'' Mr. Scott said.
