he lost at last week's Speaker's Dinner.

The ex-Governor mislaid his set of miniature medals, specially made for evening occasions, at the Southampton Princess banquet in honour of the Queen.

He feared the awards had been pocketed by a tourist after falling from his chest.

"I'm hard to upset, but it's a little upsetting,'' he told The Royal Gazette last week.

Unknown to Sir Edwin, Mr. Caines had found the medals while cleaning up after the dinner.

When he saw the Gazette story he called Sir Edwin and told him they had not been lost.

"I've just seen your picture in the paper and I think I have your medals,'' Mr. Caines told him.

Sir Edwin offered to collect them, but Mr. Caines rode to the ex-Governor's home in Paget and delivered them himself.

He explained he had been among the workers cleaning up after the banquet, and had spotted the medals under a table.

With no senior staff around to whom he could report the find, he had put the awards in his pocket.

He had been thinking he should take them to the Police when he saw the The Royal Gazette story.

"I gave him a modest reward,'' said Sir Edwin.

"I told him: `Jack, you are the kind of person who restores one's faith in one's fellow humans.'' Mr. Caines, of Warwick, is the cousin of a former Government House butler, Sir Edwin added.
