Government has appointed Mr. Simons as the top truant officer.

The Royal Gazette has learned he is leaving the post of dog warden in the Agriculture and Fisheries Department to join the Education Ministry.

He will soon become the attendance officer/coordinator, charged with supervising seven others as they ensure the attendance of school-age children at their respective schools.

When contacted yesterday, Mr. Simons declined to comment on when he would begin work in the new job, referring all questions to the Education Ministry.

The coordinator's salary is roughly on par with the dog warden's, but carries with it more responsibility, particularly in supervising more staff.

The post comes with an annual salary of $42,854 to $45,422.

Mr. Simons, a former Policeman, is expected to work closely with principals, parents, and other agencies responsible for students.

Other responsibilities include monitoring the computerised attendance recording system and preparing system-wide reports on students with bad records.

His replacement as dog warden will report to the Government veterinarian and is expected to enforce all aspects of dog legislation.

Other responsibilities include giving evidence in court, capturing dogs and giving lectures in the Island's schools and community.

Applicants must have a Bermuda Secondary School Certificate or O'Level passes in English with a certificate in animal control or an equivalent.

A minimum of one year's experience in dog handling is required.

Weapons handling skills will be an asset as the dog warden must be able to operate nets fired by a special gun and other equipment.
