Gibbons promises to make dump fence safer for kids
damaging a fence originally erected to prevent passers-by and students from getting into the former dump.
Works and Engineering Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons made this promise during the Motion to Adjourn.
Shadow Health and Social Services Minister Mr. Nelson Bascome said the fence, located across from the former Victor Scott school, had been steadily deteriorating because of debris from the former dump falling on it.
Mr. Bascome said Government had talked about fixing it for some time and it had now reached a point of some seriousness because the fence was no longer able to prevent children from wondering into the dump and possibly getting hurt.
The Shadow Minister also called on Health and Social Services Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness to look into reports that the Pembroke Parish Rest Home was closing down its senior citizens day care.
Mr. Bascome said that if such reports were true this was a sad day for the community because the home provides a needed service to families who are attempting to care for their elderly relatives.
Mr. Edness said that the Pembroke Parish rest home was not under his Ministry since the operation and function of the rest home was done by the Parish Council.
Moreover, Mr. Edness said that he was not aware of any attempts that had been made to phase out the day care programme. He said that the rest home came under the Ministry of Human Affairs and he would be taking up the issue with his colleague the Hon. Jerome Dill .
Shadow Education Minister Ms Jennifer Smith said she had learned that Government were going to discontinue the science programme at the Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo.
And she said if such reports were true, this was unsatisfactory because the programme had received plaudits for teaching students about the ecology and the ecosystem.
Education Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira meantime, said he was aware that it was being reevaluated. He said he recognised the programme's value and would look into the matter.
Ms Smith also warned boat owners to observe the five knot zone over the Queen's Birthday holiday because there had been a number of close calls in the Mullett Bay Area.
The Shadow Minister also wanted Government to look into the reasons why the Richard Allen AME Church had received a bill for use of parking lots near the church when church members were unable to use all of them due to water trucks occupying some spaces.
Works and Engineering Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons said he will look into the matter.
Ms Smith said she also would like to see the University if Maryland remain in Bermuda because of its service to Bermudians who wished to further their education.
Mr. Walter Lister , PLP special assistant for Management and Technology, said he wanted to see the days when Bermudians are able to go on all the Island's beaches.
He too called on Government to take measures to ensure that the beach located at Daniel's head and Fort St. Catherine's will be opened to the public.
Government backbencher Mrs. Ann Cartwright DeCouto suggested that the Green Paper Committee ask all those Bermudians who made submissions on Independence for their permission to make those views public. If this permission is granted then they should be brought to the House.
