Golf caddy Mr. Brian (Sherlock Holmes) Sherlock was murdered in a "frenzied'' stabbing attack in a city carpark on Thursday night, detectives believe.

The 38-year-old -- who "moved with a group of street people''-- was left for dead with several stab wounds and head injuries, acting assistant Police commissioner Supt. Wayne Perinchief said at a news conference yesterday.

It is understood the Mid Ocean Golf Club caddy was discovered collapsed in a pool of blood yesterday morning by a woman on her way to a nearby gym.

He was Bermuda's third murder victim this year.

And Police are not ruling out a connection between his murder and the death of a fellow Mid Ocean caddy last Christmas.

"There are some parallells we need to consider,'' Supt. Perinchief said, referring to the suspected murder of Mr. Irvin Dunlop. "We know they both worked in the same place and frequented similar places.'' Insp. Legay Farley, heading the team of detectives probing the murder, said Mr. Sherlock was last seen at about 11 p.m. on Thursday night.

At that time he had been laying in virtually the same spot he was found dead in -- a grassy patch in the parking lot on the corner of Elliott and Brunswick Streets, opposite the Island Press.

People passing through the area may have thought he was sleeping, Insp. Farley said.

He noted Mr. Sherlock was still alive at 6.30 a.m. when the woman discovered him.

He died shortly after arriving at hospital.

"He obviously lay bleeding for hours,'' Supt. Perinchief said. "He had puncture wounds about his body as well as blunt trauma to his head. There were several stab wounds. We believe it was a short, frenzied attack.'' Supt. Perinchief said his concern over violent crime on the Island had been heightened in recent weeks.

"In addition to the murders, there have been several vicious attacks on people resulting in them being hospitalised,'' he said.

Police had no leads on Mr. Sherlock's yesterday, he said, and were eager to speak to anyone who was in the area and may have seen something.

There were indications his attacker sneaked up on him and that he had been struggling to try and defend himself.

There was no evidence the victim was robbed, though Police found a small amount of money in the area, he said.

Detectives had not found a murder weapon, Insp. Perinchief said.

He said it was possible two weapons were used and there could have been more than one attacker.

Mr. Sherlock's last known address was Parsons Road, Pembroke. He was unmarried.
