Government overspent budget by $5.8 million
to $5.8 million last year.
But almost all the overspend will be clawed back in cuts, says Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul.
Dr. Saul presented a list of overspending for 1991/2 at the beginning of yesterday's Budget debate in the House of Assembly.
The list shows an overspend of more than $3.4 million at Education, which went on salaries.
It is believed the spending followed a new contract for teachers awarded last year.
Other items on the list are a $1.2 million overspend by Social Services and an extra $130,000 paid out on refurbishing Hamilton Police station.
Dr. Saul told The Royal Gazette : "Of the $5.8 million request, almost all will be offset by savings. We will finish the year basically flat.'' The overspending will be debated next Friday. But MPs can only discuss the larger items.
