Govt. pulls controversial Independence ads
complaints that they contained inaccuracies.
"I learned of people who had felt the ads were not quite correct,'' Government Information Services director Mr. Gavin Shorto told The Royal Gazette "I had a look myself and both of them were open to misinterpretation.
"I took them off (the air) as quickly as I could.'' The two ads -- one dealing with defence and the other with the monarchy -- are part of a $124,000 media campaign that has been under fire for misleading statements and perceived pro-Independence bias.
Both TV spots that were pulled featured Environment Minister the Hon. Gerald Simons.
Mr. Shorto would not discuss the details of the complaints and would not say the ads contained errors. "They are both statements which are open to misinterpretation,'' he said.
Sources said one complaint related to Sen. Simons' statement that Britain would still be willing to send military assistance to Bermuda after Independence. While the British would assist with training, "they won't send you any help'' in the event of a riot, "that's for sure,'' the source said.
Details of the other complaint were not immediately known.
"I have viewed the rest of the ads and I think they're fine,'' Mr. Shorto said. "These are the only two that I received complaints about.'' Human Affairs and Information Minister the Hon. Jerome Dill, the Minister responsible for the ad campaign, also would not label the ads inaccurate.
"We are not in the business of putting out misinformation,'' Mr. Dill said.
"I don't want to get into a situation where the debate about the ads overshadows the ads' educational content.
"If there is debate about them, and it is something which we can see ourselves, we will not hesitate to act.'' Mr. Dill would not discuss details of the complaints, either. "We do recognise that certain people could have put a certain construction on them,'' he said. "The important thing is that the ads are gone.'' Sen. Simons said he was "merely an actor'' in the two commercials, and he was unaware that they had been pulled.
The ads, which feature other Cabinet Ministers including the Hon. Maxwell Burgess, the Hon. David Saul, and the Hon. Irving Pearman, were produced by Bermuda's Aardvark Advertising Ltd.
