Guests say drugs were used at Police Club

Guests who attended a function at a Police social club claim that the venue is being used to hold drugs parties -- with Police officers regularly on the guest list.

And Police Commissioner Jean-Jacques Lemay has now ordered an internal investigation after receiving several reports that drugs have been smoked at the Police Club, which is located at Police headquarters at Prospect.

The Royal Gazette has received calls from two independent witnesses who claim that marijuana cigarettes were being rolled and smoked at a function on Tuesday night -- the night before the Remembrance Day public holiday.

And one of the witnesses claimed that she had been at the club on another occasion when drugs were openly used.

"You could smell it as soon as you walked into the hall,'' the guest said.

"People were openly rolling cigarettes and smoking them -- it was all very obvious.

"I don't know if any Police officers were smoking but there were certainly a lot of Policemen there, although they didn't do anything about it.

"At about 2 a.m. a Police sergeant did get up to the mike and said that, unless everyone stopped smoking their s**t, they would have to stop the party.

"But nothing else happened and people just carried on. The same thing happened at another party I went to there.

"I think it's really bad the way the Police say they are cracking down on clubs and stuff and yet they let it go on in their own club.'' Police probe Police Club party the club on Tuesday night, and added that the club manager, a civilian, had since been interviewed by Commissioner Lemay in connection with Tuesday night's party.

Police were called to the venue after a brawl broke out between several men.

When asked about the incident, in which one of the club's windows was smashed, a Police spokesman said that once the fight had broken up, no further action was taken.

He added that he knew nothing of any drugs being found on the premises and that the party had not been arranged by the Police, although several officers were known to have attended.

But last night Commissioner Lemay confirmed that an inquiry into the matter had been launched, although he refused to give any further details.

"These are internal issues that are being looked into as we speak,'' he said.

"A number of things are being looked into so I'm not prepared at this point to talk about it.

"There are a number of issues that have to be addressed with regard to the club such as who organised the function on Tuesday night and for whose benefit it was.

"In terms of smoking I have heard the rumours but I haven't been able to confirm whether they are true or not. I suggest that you give me a call when we have all the facts and have got to the bottom of this.'' The brawl that broke out at the Police Club on Tuesday night is being linked to a second incident that occurred a few hours later in Hamilton in which a man received serious head injuries.

Shaun Stevens, 24, from Pembroke, was rushed to hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning after being beaten by a gang.

Last night a hospital spokesman described Mr. Stevens' condition as satisfactory.
