Board Chairman, Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis reacted to the non-appearance of the Stonington Beach Hotel at their liquor licence hearing yesterday morning.

"Stonington Beach Hotel is the pacesetter. They are supposed to be teaching others how to do business,'' he said.

"Here we are on the 13th of May, about to grant a licence for a hotel who has been selling liquor for some time without a liquor licence.

"Someone in the upper echelons of the business just seems to have forgotten (to attend the hearing or send the application in on time).

"They have made this late application and no one is even here today.'' Board members Mrs. Katherine Trerice and Mr. George Morris agreed, saying that there was a need for the Act to perhaps be revised, or stiffer penalties be given for late applications.

"We are getting disgusted with terribly late applications,'' Mr. Francis said, "and this is not the first major hotel.

"They (Stonington) should be showing everyone else how to run a hotel.

"We will permit this, but I hope the message gets out from the smallest to the biggest. The businesses should start thinking about putting their liquor licence applications in at the beginning of the year. They know the procedure.

This is a very old Liquor Licensing Act.'' Mrs. Trerice agreed, noting that she was signing the application, but only under protest.
