anniversary was marred by a handbag-snatcher.

Hotel staff and businessmen dipped into their pockets to replace the $1,000 stolen from Mr. Myron Hartford and his wife, Peggy.

And yesterday Mrs. Hartford exclaimed: "I can't believe how kind people have been.

"It's just incredible, and restores your faith in human nature.'' The couple were targeted by a thief as they rode on the same bike along South Road in Tucker's Town at about 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The motorcyclist came up alongside them, snatching Mrs. Hartford's shoulder bag.

It contained $1,000, passports, airline tickets and credit cards.

Mr. Hartford, who took part in the Marion-Bermuda yacht race, chased the thief through the Mid Ocean Golf Club, but he managed to get away.

Mrs. Hartford, meanwhile, flagged down a man in a jeep who called the Police over his cellular phone.

Staff at Paget's Palm Reef Hotel -- where the couple are staying -- were horrified by the incident.

And they had a collection among themselves to help the Hartfords.

Hotel general manager Mrs. Bridget Marshall also phoned 14 local businessmen who immediately offered to help.

"The reaction was terrific. Some even offered twice as much as I asked for,'' said Mrs. Marshall.

"It's such a sad thing to happen. Bermuda has a reputation as a safe destination.'' Yesterday the couple were handed $1,002 at a special ceremony at the hotel.

They also received a card signed by all the staff.

Said Mr. Hartford: "I am truly overwhelmed. Everyone on the Island, including the Police, have been so supportive.

"We've both been touched by their thoughtfulness.'' It is the second time the Hartfords have visited Bermuda -- the first being 27 years ago on their honeymoon.

"We will definitely return to the Island. It's so beautiful,'' said Mr.

Hartford.

Meanwhile, Police yesterday appealed for witnesses to the snatch.

They also want the driver of the jeep to give them a call.

The thief is described as dark brown skinned, and stockily built. He was wearing a black T-shirt and red helmet. His bike was also red.
