Inmates ace academic exams
passed the latest series of academic exams.
And Nadine Lapsley-Dyer, Education Coordinator for the Prisons, said this year's total participation rates were comparable with previous years.
In Westgate's voluntary education programme one candidate passed the Bermuda Secondary School Certificate (BSSC) Level Five examination, five passed Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Maths, four passed RSA English, and four passed General Certificate of Education (GCE) English. One inmate also passed the Advanced GCE Law examination.
And in the mandatory Co-ed education programme 17 inmates passed 23 BSSC exams ranging from level two to five.
The BSSC levels range from middle school year three to the last year of senior school. Two female inmates also passed the RSA exam. And one female inmate passed RSA English.
Despite the positive results, Mrs. Lapsley-Dyer said there was still a need for volunteers to provide more tutorial opportunities.
"I'm looking for volunteers to work one on one with an individual teaching remedial mathematics and reading,'' she explained.
Qualified teachers would be especially welcome, said Mrs. Lapsley-Dyer. But anyone with "the desire to help those who want to have a second chance'' were invited to apply.
"I'm looking for a commitment,'' she said. "You're working with individuals who have already experienced many disappointments in their lives.
After academic and security training, volunteers will be expected to make two one-hour visits a week.
"The object of the education service is really to upgrade the academic levels of the inmate and to prepare him for vocational services and work upon release,'' said Mrs. Lapsley-Dyer. "In order to fulfil our mission...to prepare persons in our custody to return as more productive citizens.'' Interested persons should contact Mrs. Lapsley-Dyer at Prison Headquarters on 295-4975.
