January was a sad month, MPs note

Mr. Frank (Bobby) Ray, Mr. Robert Eugene (Bobbie) Burcher, Mr. Robert (Bobby) Charles Lowe and Mrs. Gladys Ione Darrell Ratteray were among those who received tributes.

Several MPs joined Works and Engineering Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons in asking that condolences be sent to Mrs. Mildred Ray, whose husband Bobby died recently at age 64.

Mr. Gibbons noted Mr. Ray worked 45 years at the Bermuda Aquarium before he retired last year and was responsible for the displays in the aquarium's tanks.

Also, "his knowledge of fishing was unsurpassed''.

Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan paid tribute to Mr. Burcher, noting that he loved poetry and the sea and was always trying to raise the goodwill of the country.

Mr. David Dodwell MP called Mr. Burcher "one of our finest ambassadors in Tourism.'' Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul asked that condolences be sent to the family of Mr. Lowe.

He noted Mr. Lowe was a former Bermuda Rhodes Scholar and Clerk of the House who became assistant Finance Secretary and head of the Budget department in the Finance Ministry.

Mrs. Lois Browne Evans MP sent condolences to Mrs. Darrell Ratteray, noting she was the first woman in Bermuda to become a registered pharmacist and her family tree included four past and present MPs: Mrs. Helene Brown, Mrs. Gloria McPhee, Mr. Gilbert Darrell, and Dr. Ewart Brown MP.

MPs from both sides of the House joined Mr. Harry Soares MP in sending condolences to Health and Social Services Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness and other relatives of Mr. Earlston Rudolph (Poosie) Edness, who died recently.

Mr. Edness, who was survived by his wife Jane, was the brother of the Health Minister, who thanked MPs for their kind words.

"The attendance at the service was a tribute to the life led by Earlston,'' said Mr. Alex Scott MP.

Mr. Soares also sent condolences to the family of Mr. David Alvin Ferreira, who died recently. He was a well-known golfer and owner of Modern Mart.

Mr. Scott sent condolences to the family of Mrs. Rose Magdalene Caines, who "had become an institution in Warwick East'' before her recent death.

Mr. Nelson Bascome MP sent condolences to the families of Mr. Lawrence (Stickers) Hendrickson, Jr., and P.c. William Troy James, "two young men who have provided personality to our community''.

Mr. Hendrickson was a noted gombey dancer and P.c. James "exemplified'' what a Bermuda Police officer should be.

Mr. Ottiwell Simmons MP sent condolences to the family of Mr. Carl Simmons on the recent loss of his mother, Mrs. Daghmar Joycelene (Joyce) Simmons, who was the MP's "very loving aunt.'' Mr. Simmons also sent condolences to the family of Mrs. Claudine Winifred Smith, who operated Swan's Grocery on Glebe Road until she died recently at age 84.

Finally, Mr. Simmons sent condolences to the family of Mr. Beresford James Ford, an accomplished plumber who died recently.

Transport Minister the Hon. Maxwell Burgess sent condolences to the family of Mrs. Carol Angeline Outerbridge, a longtime Hamilton Parish resident who died in December.

Mr. Reginald Burrows MP sent condolences to the family of Mr. Charles Eldon (Chicken) Conyers, "the longest-serving plumber in Bermuda,'' who died in December at age 90.

Mr. Wilfred Rowling Tucker, who was a member of the Bermuda Militia Infantry in the Second World War and later a taxi driver, was also eulogised by Mr.

Burrows.

The MP also sent condolences to the family of his "dear friend,'' Mr.

Reginald Vincent (Doc) Todd, who died recently.

Mr. Trevor Woolridge MP sent condolences to the family of Mr. Sherman Benjamin, a young man and father who became Bermuda's first road fatality of the year.

Mr. Richard Spurling MP sent condolences to the family of Mrs. Charlotte Hyacinth Lamb of St. David's, who recently died in her 102nd year.

Mr. Stanley Morton MP sent condolences to the families of Mrs. Lois Ismay Lindsay, and Mr. Edmund Ashton (Guy) Hollinsid, both of whom died recently.

Mr. Trevor Moniz MP sent condolences to the family of Mrs. Valerie Evans, who died recently.

The Hon. Wes Hall, Sport and Works Minister in Barbados, received condolences from Youth and Sport Minister the Hon. Pamela Gordon on the recent death of his mother.

Dr. David Dyer MP sent condolences to the family of Mr. D. Frith, who was born in Texas but came to Bermuda at an early age and "became a valuable member of the community.'' There were also congratulations sent.

Government Whip Mr. John Barritt congratulated the winners of the recent high school debating contest organised by the Bermuda Junior Service League, participants in the teen television series Fast Forward, organisers and participants in the children's TV series Learn A Lot, former Chief Justice the Hon. Sir James Astwood on his elevation to the Court of Appeal, and the Wor.

Charles-Etta Simmons on being elevated to Magistrate.

Mr. Leon (Jimmy) Williams MP tipped his hat to Mr. Gary Robinson of St.

George's, instructor of the St. George's Marshall team, for his work with young people.

Mr. Williams also congratulated three residents who received New Year's honours this year. They were Miss Ruth Thomas, Mr. C. Orville Bascome, and Mr.

Calvert (Kelly) Zuill.

Mr. Soares congratulated Mrs. Louise Wilson, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday; Mr. Keith Hart of Paget, Bermuda's unofficial Santa Claus for 25 years; and Mrs. Ursula Hart, who has taught at Paget Primary School for 32 years.

Community and Culture Minister the Hon. Wayne Furbert congratulated Mrs.

Celeste Bean of Radnor Road in Hamilton Parish, who celebrated her 90th in late December.

Mr. Tim Smith MP congratulated organisers and participants in the recent sports seminar Fundraising in the '90s. He also congratulated Bermuda's most recent Rhodes Scholar, 23-year-old Miss Christina Eliot Storey.

Education Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira sent congratulations to the organisers and coaches of the recent East-West All-Star soccer match, as well as everyone involved with Education Month.

Mr. Trevor Woolridge MP congratulated Mr. and Mrs. Bernell Trott of Hamilton Parish, who recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Mr. David Allen MP congratulated Mrs. Lucy Willitts, for her work in providing aid to Bosnian war victims.

Ms Gordon congratulated Ms Leleath Bailey, her secretary at the Ministry, who on Thursday was elected president of the Bermuda Public Services Association.

She also congratulated the Bermuda cricket team participating in a tournament in Kenya, and Mr. Dwayne Bulford, a Special Olympian who competed in the marathon on International Race Weekend.

Ms Gordon also paid tribute to Mr. Kavin Smith and Ms Tracy Wright, the top two Bermudian finishers in the ADT Bermuda 10-K.

Ms Raquel Emery was congratulated for being named Candy Striper of the Year.

Human Affairs Minister the Hon. Jerome Dill congratulated the Dandy Town Hornets and their president Mr. Elroy Ratteray for the way the team conducted itself in winning a soccer tournament on January 1.

He also sent congratulations and encouragement to the mother and daughter team of Mary and Elizabeth Walker, who have left for Delhi to work for the Bahai faith.

Ms Renee Webb MP congratulated Mrs. Dana Dunn Smith on the launch of her new book Nations in Waiting.

Dr. Brown congratulated the teachers and staff at Warwick Preschool who organised a march to commemorate the recent birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King.

Mr. Edness congratulated Health workers for organising Heart Month and the young people who made Drug Awareness Day a reality.
