Jilted lover jailed for nine months

A jilted man who assaulted a woman received a nine-month prison sentence in Magistrates'Court recently.

Crown counsel Leighton Rochester told the court last week that at 1.30 a.m. on January 6, 1998 Hubert Douglas, 24, of My Lord's Bay Lane, Hamilton Parish had a fight with his ex-girlfriend Teanisha Smith. The woman escaped and ran into the nearby house of Rhoda Olive Wilson.

Douglas later entered Wilson's house without permission.

The court heard Wilson's son was asleep in an upstairs bedroom with Douglas' ex-girlfriend. They locked the door from the inside, but Douglas forced his way into the room. The Police were called to the scene of the incident and Douglas was arrested.

Douglas told Magistrate Archibald Warner he had a personal relationship with Ms. Smith and he became upset on discovering he had been jilted. "I have done a whole lot for her,''said Douglas.

An altercation is said to have started outside Wilson's house. Douglas showered the woman with blows before she made her escape into the neighbouring house for cover.

Douglas pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the house, assault on the younger Wilson, and causing damage to two doors, a fan and a lock.

Some $115 in damage to the doors was caused in the hot pursuit, and $49 in damage to the fan.

Meanwhile, the former girlfriend who was beaten severely and required hospital treatment, declined to press charges for assault.

Magistrate Archibald Warner told Douglas before sentencing him: "You need some anger management. Try to get it while you are up there, see.'' Douglas responded, "I felt used by her and a fight developed, she ran into Wilson's house and I chased her.''
