Again bottles and cans -- particularly beer bottles -- made up the bulk of the trash recovered.

KBB president Scott Kitson said he was pleased with this year's clean-up and added that Bermudians will need to become more responsible about where they put their trash.

"It was very much a success. Seven and a half tons of trash says a lot,'' Mr.

Kitson said.

"For the most part Government does a good job of keeping our roads clean,'' he continued. "But the real issue is the trash that is thrown over the wall.

It's harder to clean due to the trees.'' Mr. Kitson added: "We will have to learn how to be responsible about our litter. It is not hard to hold onto litter and dispose of it properly.'' He said KBB will be redoubling its efforts in combating the problem with more clean ups and other programmes.

Mr. Kitson said his family-owned company, Kitson and Company, and a home-schooling group collected 20 bags of trash at the Warwick Playground at Warwick Long Bay.

This was one of many "Adopt-a-Park'' projects KBB launch among local businesses.

"Most of it is through lack of knowledge and understanding about littering,'' Mr. Kitson said.

Later this week KBB will prepare a statistical breakdown on the amount and type of trash collected on Saturday.
