KBB officials to educate youths on environment
year in an effort to make young people aware of their environment, according to KBB chief Ms Kendaree Burgess-Fairn.
KBB administrators plan to visit at least one school per month to educate students on the environment.
"We'd like to put together a travelling slide show -- if we can get the technical expertise -- so we can go into all of the schools within a year and get our message across,'' said Ms Burgess-Fairn.
As well, Bermuda Institute teacher and KBB education chairman Michael Faison has written an environmentally educational play called "Tears of the Sea'', which stars Bermuda Institute students.
"We want to take the play on the road and to different schools starting in October,'' said Ms Burgess-Fairn.
She noted also that KBB officials have distributed copies of Leroy Learns a Lesson, an environmental video, to the primary schools.
Each still life frame in the video tells a story, said Ms Burgess-Fairn, noting that picture hand-outs matching the video frames are also available.
In addition to focusing on the Island's youth, KBB has planned a series of parish clean-ups. Scheduled for September and October, they will involve neighbourhoods and organisations like sports clubs and church groups.
"The key to their success is to appeal to certain groups that live in the areas which need to be cleaned up,'' she said. "We're hoping for a good turn-out. And so far, we've had a good response.
A pioneer in environmental awareness on the Island, KBB has also recently launched a new environmental product which allows people to easily reuse envelopes.
"Remailing stickers have been designed by KBB to help people reuse envelopes again and again,'' said Ms Burgess-Fairn. "They're available from our office and we'd like to eventually distribute them Island-wide.
"Ideally, we'd like to see corporate entities use them in all of their correspondence. And whether they use our labels or make their own doesn't matter -- it's just a way of getting people to think about reusing,'' she said.
