life better for the Island's disabled residents.

The projects were announced yesterday which was the official start of Access Awareness Week.

The theme this year is "Access in the City of Hamilton'', chosen to coincide with the capital's 200th birthday celebrations.

Community Affairs Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons revealed a special survey was currently being designed to determine just how accessible buildings throughout the city were to disabled people.

The survey would be distributed to all Hamilton businesses in the fall, he said.

The other projects include: Working with the Ministry of Transport and Bermuda Physically Handicapped Association on the issue of the transportation needs of disabled residents. A special meeting is planned for tomorrow.

Working with Police and the Bermuda Telephone Company to establish a 911 emergency system for hearing impaired people who use special telephones.

And working with Project JOB to provide employment services for disabled people and their potential employers.

"A city with good access to its buildings and facilities will also greatly assist mothers with prams, senior citizens as well as small children to have equal access to the goods and services of the community,'' Mr. Gibbons said.

Several events are planned for the week, including special speeches, church workshops and the displaying of the Mobile Library and other "accessible vehicles'' at City Hall.
