Police said the victim claimed he was riding his motorcycle near St. Augustine Hill when he was approached by a gang of youths. He said he was punched, kicked and threatened with a knife while his jewellery was ripped off him.

He was taken to hospital where he required stitches to close a head wound.

There were five assaults over the weekend including one on a 57-year-old Warwick man in his home in the early hours of Sunday.

The man was struck in the head and needed eight stitches.

Police said the motive for the assault was not immediately apparent, but it is believed to have followed an altercation with another resident.

An investigation is continuing.

A man was arrested for drunk driving after a three-car smash in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It was one of 20 road traffic accidents Police attended over the weekend.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight on North Shore Road in Devonshire near Loyal Hill. A Nissan car travelling west crashed into the rear of a taxi outside the Anchorage Bar and then struck another car on the other side of the road which was travelling in the opposite direction.

None of the occupants of the three cars were injured, although extensive damage was caused to their vehicles.

The driver of the Nissan was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired.

Police are on the lookout for a car that was stolen from a city street on Sunday night.

It was a white Subaru with the licence number 27267 and was stolen from Dundonald Street about midnight.
