years in jail after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to an elderly Devonshire woman.

"No satisfactory explanation has been given for this vicious and unprovoked attack on a 76-year-old woman,'' Chief Justice Austin Ward told the accused, Calvin Eugene Trott, before passing sentence.

Trott was charged last fall after entering the home of the victim on September 30 and assaulting her, causing facial bruises and a suspected fracture.

Crown Counsel Wilhelm Bourne told the Court Trott had been in conflict with the law since 1987, with offences escalating from break and enter to threatening behaviour to violently resisting arrest.

In June of 1991 he received two six-year sentences for robbery and deprivation of liberty, and an additional one year for demanding property with menace. The sentences ran concurrently and Trott was released from Westgate on December 23, 1995.

"I'm sorry for what happened,'' Trott told Mr. Justice Ward. "I'm more responsible now. We were born in sin so no longer will I make anymore mess than there already is about me.'' Trott also apologised to the victim and told the Court he is seeking professional help.

Defence Counsel Michael Scott told the Court Trott accepted responsibility for his actions, but his compulsive behaviour may indicate "he is not in total control''.
