Bermuda celebrations are continuing until the end of June.

Earth Day committee spokesman Mrs. Lisa Greene said events planned over the next six weeks were aimed at making more Bermudians aware of environmental issues.

The first Earth Day in 1970 saw more than 20 million Americans from across the country and on college campuses get involved in environmental issues.

The Bermuda committee for the celebration of Earth Day began in June, 1993 when a group of teachers went to the environmental Education 2000 convention in Virginia.

Sufficient interest by those teachers and many other Bermudians helped to form an interim committee which then started the Committee for the Celebration of Earth Day in 1995, a registered Bermuda charity.

Through the efforts of Mrs. Greene and other local organisers, Earth Day has become an annual event in Bermuda.

Government has made steps forward in trying to provide a better environment, but people still need to be educated about how to reduce waste, she said.

Earth Day celebrations for this week and next include the following: An Environmental Exposition at Number One shed, under the auspices of the Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs, takes place tomorrow from 1 p.m.

to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be 18 booths, with some businesses and charities displaying environmentally-themed information.

Also on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Number One shed there will be a kid-theme play by Black Box Productions called "Mystical Island''.

A Bermuda Audobon Society-sponsored nature walk at Horseshoe Bay on Sunday at 2 p.m. The walk, which is open to all, starts at Horseshoe Bay car park at 2 p.m.

On May 24, the theme of the Bermuda Day Parade is "Celebrating Bermuda's Natural Heritage''.
