Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said the man was riding east on North Shore Road in Devonshire on Friday evening when the accident occurred.
Seemingly the man overtook a van in front of him and then had to swerve to avoid an oncoming car.
As he tried to return to his side of the road he is believed to have lost control and fell in the road in front of the car.
P.c. Venning said the rider sustained chest and abdominal injuries and was rushed to the hospital where he remains in the intensive care unit.
Witnesses to the accident are asked to call P.c. Stephen Ebbin at 295-0011.
