MP: Crack down on attacks on visitors
A top Government MP yesterday called for stiffer sentences for people convicted of raids on cyclists -- especially women tourists.
Quinton Edness -- Government Whip and ex-Public Safety Minister -- said: "I think sentences for this kind of crime should be trebled.
"Everybody in Bermuda will condemn a person who carry out such cowardly crimes.'' Mr. Edness was speaking after US visitor Nancy Keating was knocked from her cycle after a youth on a motorcycle tried to grab her waist pouch.
As Mrs. Keating lay stunned, the youth punched her and threatened to kill her.
Mrs. Keating gave up the pouch but the youth tried to pull off a diamond necklace.
The youth ran off after a passing motorist stopped.
The attack happened on Wednesday on South Shore near the Pink Beach Hotel.
A teenager has been arrested in connection with an incident in the area.
Mr. Edness said: "Women -- especially tourists -- are especially vulnerable because they may not be familiar with the Island.
"This knocking people off their bikes or purse snatching leaves women very frightened.
"We need stronger penalties to help deter this -- not only is it preying on vulnerable people, it's the kind of thing which could hurt our economy very seriously.''
