MPs increase pressure for Paget Post Office
Paget -- post haste.
And Paget West MP Tim Smith (UBP) accused Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott (PLP) of dodging questions on the issue.
Mr. Smith's running mate Patricia Gordon Pamplin tabled three questions asking how much money was allocated for the Post Office, its site and when the new building would open for business.
Mr. Scott said more than $670,000 had been allocated in the last financial year -- and that most of that was available to be carried over into this year's financial blueprint.
But Mr. Smith asked if the rules on carrying over cash had been followed.
He said money for capital projects could be carried over -- but that the Works and Engineering Minister had to put it in writing for the Finance Minister's consideration.
And he added that the Finance Minister had to formally reply, signalling that the money could be carried over.
But Mr. Smith said: "They didn't answer the question on whether that had been done -- they avoided it. All I want to see is the certification.'' Earlier, Mr. Scott said in his reply to Ms Gordon Pamplin: "A proposed site for the new post office is situated just east of the Trimingham's store on South Shore Road in Paget.
"However, negotiations have been initiated with the Bermuda College to locate the facility on the Stonington campus, to provide better parking facilities.
The College would like to incorporate a teaching nursery into the facility.'' And he added: "Once the site issue has been resolved and the design work carried out to date updated, the project can be constructed in approximately eight months.'' The current Post Office on Middle Road, Paget, has been criticised for being to small and lacking proper parking.
The Post Office became a hot issue in the recent Paget West by-election, caused by the death of sitting UBP MP Madeline Joell.
