And Police are prepared to pay a civilian expert as much as $59,000 to fill the new post of intelligence analyst, reporting direct to CID boss Det. Supt.

Vic Richmond.

Acting Det. Supt. George Jackson said: "This is one of the posts which will enhance our policing strategy in the sense that we're getting in line with best practice elsewhere.'' He added: "It's a job which was highlighted and made necessary as a result of the National Intelligence Bureau being formed.

"This is one of the areas and job categories which had to be filled. We don't just gather intelligence -- we have to analyse and interpret it and make predictions.'' An advertisement in the official gazette said the postholder will be responsible for "collecting, analysing and disseminating intelligence in order to combat serious crime''.

The duties of the new post include analysing current intelligence and keeping other officers posted on the latest crime trends.

The new recruit will also be in charge of spotting new criminal trends, briefing senior officers and developing new techniques.

The succesful candidate will have a background in Police, military or "other law enforcement agency'' and at least three years' experience.
