New school construction on schedule
right on schedule, according to Works and Engineering Minister the Hon.
Leonard Gibbons.
And he added yesterday that the plans were progressing "nicely'' with the masonry due to start shortly on the south building.
Mr. Gibbons also said that another contract was to be awarded for the foundations for zone C, which is one of six buildings being constructed.
Minister of Education the Hon. Clarence Terceira also said the framework for the school's buildings were progressing well.
He added that teachers in the public school system were being interviewed by the head of the restructuring team Mr. John McLaughlin on their likes and dislikes, whether they were interested in working in the new school, their strengths and requests, and where they would best fit in.
On the issue of plans for the senior school curriculum he added that the target date for completion for the middle school curriculum is December 31 and the team will then concentrate on the senior school.
He also said the newly selected senior school board was working.
"I will be meeting with the board on August 14 and we will go on a site visit. The board is working out time schedules and is about to start the selection process for a principal. It is also in the process of selecting a name for the school. These are the board's immediate duties.
"They also want to make themselves familiar with the site plans and the curriculum,'' he said.
The building will have floor space totaling 243,000 square feet of space.
The school is expected to have an overall full-time enrolment of about 500 students, plus about 3,000 part-time students in adult and continuing education programmes.
Deadlines for the completion of the six buildings making up the school, which already have some of the frame work, is by June 1997, to prepare for a September opening for its first students.
Chief Education Officer Mr. Dean Furbert said he was not anticipating any problems which would cause schools to open late after the summer holiday.
"Most of the schools are undergoing major rehabilitation and repainting according to our four-year cycle, and work is going on in 10 schools including one secondary and three pre-schools,'' he said.
