The 16-page supplement focuses on literacy and also describes the NIE programme, which is aimed at using newspapers as a teaching tool in the classroom.

The Royal Gazette Ltd. began an NIE pilot programme in September when teacher and musician Ron Lightbourne joined the company as coordinator.

Under the pilot scheme, Mr. Lightbourne has been devising lesson plans based on stories in the newspaper which a specially selected group of Government schools have been using. The monthly supplements will complement the daily lesson plans.

The NIE programme is being conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Education and receives assistance from a board of current and former teachers.

Feedbacks from teachers, parents and students is also an essential component of the scheme.

"We are very glad to see the first NIE supplement go out to the public and look forward to this becoming a regular feature of The Royal Gazette's efforts to be pro-active in the community,'' said Editor Bill Zuill.

"NIE is a powerful teaching tool for schools and it also familiarises young people with the tremendous range of information that newspapers offer every day.'' EDUCATION ED NIE SUPPLEMENT MARCH 3RD, 1999 RG 7 PAGES
