bring the issue of Independence to the fore.

The NLP believes self-determination is inevitable for Bermuda and doesn't want to see events overseas forcing the Island into a course it doesn't want.

Party chairman Charles Jeffers wants the PLP to start the process of public consultation now and bring the the issue forward.

He said: "We do not understand the thinking of the PLP. The very casual concern shown about independence by the hierachy must be of concern to many of their rank and file members, supporters and other Bermudians.

"The PLP did say that independence would not be a priority during their first term in office. However, we feel that their position should be reviewed for the benefit of all Bermudians.'' Mr. Jeffers said the NLP was concerned that there seemed to be no choice in contents of the White Paper on the future of the overseas territories, and that a British Government could dictate to Bermuda on future matters.

He called on the PLP to organise forums to inform the public and hear their views.
