And National Liberal Party chairman Charles Jeffers accused the UBP of "a total lack of understanding of the magnitude of the problem.'' Mr. Jeffers said Hamilton East candidate Angelita Fox's appeal for landlords to put empty homes up for rent and St. George's North hopeful Kim Swan's defence of the free market system showed "a blatant inability or lack of understanding of the magnitude of the problems we are facing''.

And Mr. Jeffers put forward his party's three-point plan to address housing issues: Emergency housing -- including old US Navy homes at Southside, if needed -- to help people "forced out'' of their homes; Boarding house-style accommodation for single people and couples at the lowest end of the pay scale. Mr. Jeffers suggested single room/kitchen homes with shared bathroom facilities, with rents based on income; and Apartment buildings reserved as basic accommodation for low income families unlikely ever to afford even the "so-called affordable housing range''.
